The smell of white vinegar makes me think of Easter. Apple cider vinegar makes me think of summertime, and balsamic winter. I'm not sure why.
I discovered the amazing properties of vinegar about 8 years ago after breaking a 12 pack of beer bottles in my car. The smell started to get to me after a week or two. I friend at work suggested I fill a cup with vinegar and leave it in the car overnight. Presto! No more brewery smell in my car.
I have fine, longish, straight hair. I never get around to getting it cut and it's super easy to snarl. I buy a bottle of conditioner each month, at 4 bucks a pop minimum that's about $48 a year. Yikers.
On a whim I tried a white vinegar rinse about a month ago. I poured vinegar all over my head, dipped the end into a jar filled with vinegar and wrapped it up while i finished my shower chores. When I took it down, I was able to comb out the snarls super easy! I was worried about the smell, but once my hair dried there was no smell.
I did a little research a found that a good choice would be to dilute the vinegar for regular use. I bought a bicycle water bottle and glass container to put in the shower at the thrifty store, setting me back 2 bucks. A big container of vinegar was not too expensive. I'm not sure how much it was, I'll try to find the receipt and edit this post to fill this in. I'll try to keep an eye on how much I have to re purchase the vinegar.
